Preventing the risk of fire or explosion at underground coal mines

The Resources Regulator has implemented a targeted incident prevention strategy aimed at managing the risk of fire or explosion at underground coal mines. This report focuses on explosion suppression systems being a critical control measure.

The Regulator conducted a detailed inspection assessment program between January and June 2024, involving 63 assessments across 24 underground coal mines.

The assessments yielded 22 findings that required enforcement action related to explosion suppression systems. In total, 25 compliance notices were issued.

The findings from these assessments have been consolidated in a report providing analysis and recommendations for operators of underground coal mines to enhance the effectiveness of their safety management systems.
